Guidelines

For Writers

Anvil Press is a literary publisher interested in contemporary, progressive literature in all genres. We must stress that we are a small publisher, publishing 8 to 10 titles per year. In general, we are planning at least 12 months in advance and, at present, are only considering work by Canadian authors. We are not interested in seeing formulaic genre novels: Sci-Fi, Horror, Romance etc.

To expedite the process of query/consideration/ response, we strongly suggest that authors research appropriate publishers prior to submitting their manuscripts; this saves both time and money (postage, copying) on the part of authors and publishers.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

  • Only those manuscripts accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) will be considered. We assume no responsibility for unsolicited manuscripts arriving without a SASE;
  • All submissions should be typed/printed, double-spaced on 81/2 x 11 paper;
  • Response time can, on occasion, be lengthy; if you want to be assured that your manuscript has been received, include a self-addressed stamped postcard for notification.

FICTION/NON-FICTION:

  • Provide a brief, one-page synopsis of the entire manuscript (no need to break it down chapter by chapter) plus 20-30 pps. of the manuscript (enough to give the reader a good sense of style/content)

POETRY:

  • 8 - 12 poems (depending on length)

DRAMA:

  • Unless excessively long, forward entire manuscript.

N.B.

Before sending off your manuscript to a given publisher, check out that publisher’s books and catalogues at your local library or bookstore. Select those that you think would most likely be interested in your work. You may also want to check out our magazine, sub-TERRAIN. No email submissions, please.

Best regards,

The Editors
